We hear a lot about how wonderful, or how terrible, so-called "tango nuevo" looks. But in reality, whether we like the new moves or not, they aren't so new. Many of the things we do today, including boleos, ganchos, and even soltadas have a very long history. It might help us all to develop a more relaxed and accepting attitude towards the new. After all, as the saying goes, "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."
Simple steps, performed musically, often make a more beautiful tango than showy, complicated moves done without a feeling of connection and without much regard for the song. We all like speed and flash, but by themselves they don't move us on a deep level. Of course, simple moves done poorly are just boring! What dances have you seen that have it all?
